To help alleviating the problems that Tin Shui Wai faces, in particular to the youth issues and unemployment, St. James’ Settlement (SJS), a non government organization, took the initiative and take part in collaborating with Commercial Radio (CR), to set up a new training and employment program “Skyhigh Creative Partners”, to realize the intrinsic talents of young people, which can be channeled through the right platform for the creative industry.
The aim of this project is to design a multi- purpose centre, encouraging the youth residents living in Tin Shui Wai to involve themselves in the community; being able to express and identify their potential in creative industries, hence further develop their talents into becoming experts in the profession.
Our design concept, “thinking out of a box” reflects the current state of mind of young people today. Our aim is to change the monotonous, dreadful carpark to an unique creative multi- purpose center; to encourage the youth in establishing their talents and self- confidence, targeting to enhance their skills and breakthrough their own barrier.
Despite being located inside a low ceiling carpark, the final design has created an environment that not only masked over its deficiency, but introduced to the public how disadvantages and constraints to a site can be overcome and innovatively handled. The ambience created due to the slanted walls, custom designed ceiling skins, diffusion of light from the perimeter to the deep plan, and also the glowing, suspended locker walls, has demonstrated how creativity of the designers can overcome the design problems. The hexagonal shaped cluster works in coherently to the settings around it to create an invisible dimension of space, focusing within, coexisting in harmony, and not distracted by each other entities.
